The Legacy of Timbuktu
Inspired by the historic cradle of African scholarship
Our bookstore is named in honor of the historic city of Timbuktu in the Mali Empire. Between the 12th and 16th centuries, Timbuktu was not only a gateway of trade but the cradle of African intellect, housing the legendary Sankore University and hundreds of private libraries.
In its golden age, books were valued higher than gold. Millions of manuscripts were handwritten, copied, and preserved, covering astronomy, mathematics, medicine, law, and philosophy—shattering the myth of a purely oral African history.
At Timbuktu Bookstore, we inherit this sacred reverence for the written word. From our shop in Juba, we aim to be a modern-day library of manuscripts, sharing local voices and global knowledge with readers across South Sudan and East Africa.
